VOLUNTEERING

We have an amazing team of supporters who volunteer their time to help us. This can be a one off day or more regularly. We have a variety of roles that could suit you, or tell us your ideas about how you could help:

Bridleway maintenance to keep the path safe and level for the public,

Volunteers help us keep the charity in business by writing seasonal newsletters, acting as wildlife guides and promoting the charity using social media.

You can volunteer as much or as little as you like, on your own or in a team. Get in touch via our Contact Us page to hear more.

Access to the Trail

The section from Newark via Winthorpe and Langford Lowfield is part of National Cycle Route 64 which links Newark with Lincoln. This is suitable for cycling and walking. Between Winthorpe and junction of Holme Lane with the track to Langford Lowfield the route follows minor roads.

The latest section from Collingham going north along Northcroft Lane has been designed to be accessible for all ages, abilities and weathers. This section is a Byway and so can be used by horses and vehicles. Parents and carers with young children and/or disabilities need to be aware of this.

The section through the Notts Wildlife Trust (NWT) land that skirts Mons Pool to link Northcroft Lane with the car park for the NWT reserve is a footpath with permissive access for cyclists. Again it has been designed to be accessible to all ages, abilities and weathers.  Please note that horses and motorised vehicles are not allowed on this section which includes two large kissing gates (accessible by cycles) to assist with stock control of sheep grazing.

People using a wheelchair can use the RADAR gates to avoid maneuvering through the kissing gates.

Due to pot holes on the access road to the NWT car park it is currently unsuitable for wheelchairs. In the near future it is hoped this section can be improved. It is a permissive footpath with access for cycles.

The section along Trent Lane from the end of the NWT access road up to Besthorpe is a Byway, which has some pot holes. However it is ok for cycles and pushchairs. Wheelchair users are advised to check the surface before proceeding along here.

TRAIL MAPS

Phase 1 - No Markers

Phase 2 - V2 No Markers

Phase 3 - Beesthorpe to Girton

The first section links Northgate station in Newark with Collingham via Winthorpe, and accesses the RSPB wetland reserve at Langford Lowfields and forms part of National Cycle Route 64.

The second section (opened Spring 2020) goes from Collingham along Northcroft Lane onto a new track built through Besthorpe Reserve then onto Besthorpe village via Trent Lane. In October 2022 this was extended along the Fleet to Girton and northwards beyond the Sailing Club Lake to just short of Clifton Hill.

The next section will take the trail over Clifton Hill to South Clifton. Eventually it is intended to link to the Dukeries Trail via Fledborough Viaduct, before ending in North Clifton. This is dependent on securing agreements and funding.

What is the Trent Vale Trail?

A exciting project to create a 15 mile walking and cycling trail that links Newark-on-Trent with Sustran's Dukeries Trail at Fledborough Viaduct  - see route map.

A family friendly route through the amazing wetland areas of the Trent Vale for walkers, cyclists and,  wherever possible, wheelchair users and pushchairs.

A new link avoiding the A1133  to connect Newark with Collingham, Besthorpe, Girton, Spalford, South & North Clifton and Fledborough.

Who is behind the development the Trent Vale Trail?

The Trail has come about as a result of fund rasing and planning conducted by the Friends of Trent Vale Trail (a registered charity) supported by local authorities and other organisations.

Our Mission

Our mission objectives are:

  • Provide a safe route for locals and visitors to explore the southern part of the Trent Vale.

  • Connect villages with the service centre and school of Collingham without using the busy A1133.

  • To be accessible to casual cyclists and walkers of all ages, including children in pushchairs and people with limited mobility.

  • Enable access on foot, wheelchair and by bike for people to visit the many attractions of the Vale without relying on car use. This includes Langford RSPB reserve, Besthorpe Wildlife Reserve, Girton water sports centre, Fledborough Viaduct, Japanese gardens etc.

  • Link with the existing Dukeries Trail (NCN 647) which crosses Fledborough Viaduct to bring the area within easy reach of Newark, Lincoln, Retford and Clumber Park.

  • Bring visitors into the area who spend money in cafes, pubs, shops and the various recreation activities.

  • Over time the area will become known for its green tourism.
